The true art of a teaser is giving just enough to entice the audience while holding back. This teaser barely even informs you that it's a movie or part of a film franchise. I can only wonder what it was like in the theater to see this teaser for the first time. Trailer starts. "Oooh, this is kinda creepy." Pan down, heavy rain falls in a graveyard. "This is very gothic influenced." Push into one solitary tombstone, the carved name of 'Jason Voorhees' are illuminated. "Oh damn, it's a new Friday the 13th!" Lightning hits the tombstone, it explodes. A coffin pops up from the earth and slowly opens to revel it is empty. Music swells. "Oh shit, I'm seeing that on day one."
One has to recall that the previous Friday the13th outing featured a paramedic pretending to be Jason and the kid who killed Jason seemingly becoming the new Crystal Lake killer. So...it was a disappointment it a polite way to say it. So, to fans and casual moviegoers, it seemed that Jason was really dead and 'Friday the 13th The Final Chapter' was legit. That all changed when this trailer hit. Jason was not just back, he was undead.
I'm not kidding, that is literally how the film begins. Tommy Jarvis (who apparently didn't become a serial killer?) and Horshack dig up Jason's grave to seemingly set him on fire, because being dead for years is too unsure I guess. Tommy has a fit and stabs the corpse with a metal pole which is then (surprise) stuck by lightning bringing Jason back to undead life. Tommy now spends the rest of the film trying to make people believe that Jason is back while a new summer camp is about to open, with actual kids this time. Jason Lives is the perhaps the most 80's of all the Friday cycle. It's fun, it's scary, and everyone involved looks like their having a fun time. Director Tom McLoughlin wanted to bring a Universal gothic feel to the film while also using metahumor to play on a tired format. The thing that McLoughlin really does is not feel like the material is under him, he's just having fun with everything and it comes through. 'Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives' is one of the better films because of not only thee humor and atmosphere but because Jason finally has a reason why he is unstoppable. Because he's a zombie. I love this film and suggest you check it out if you haven't seen it yet.
Let's also see some TV posts for 'Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives' as well as some classic VHS deals. Enjoy.
