Free Film Friday: 'Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives' (1986)

Okay, it's been awhile. I keep on saying "We'll be right back after these messages" and then nothing.  But this is Friday the 13th. Friday the 13th is a special time for us here at CultSig! It's when we went live for the first time. Also, there's this guy...

Go Rangers.
Jason Voorhees is beloved in this town. We named a overpass after him. So well loved we have decided, like the titular goalie, to resurrect a long dead feature to honor him.

It's got a death curse, a curse called...
Free Film Friday is where we feature an individual film in it's entirety taken from a user from Youtube to be enjoyed by you, the reader (or viewer, since this is cinema). As we will be showing films that may not rest in the public trust we must, as always, state the following:

We at Culturally Significant! do not own the rights or
claim the copyright of the film embedded. Those rights
belong to the original owner and not the user unless noted.

Before we begin let's remind you of how much we love Jason (and Friday the 13th) let's re-visit our past articles covering this unlucky day.

And, of course, the trailer for our free film today. Which means that the free film for today is 'Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives!' (1986).

I have gone on and on (and on) about my love for 'Jason Lives!', most of which can be read here, so there's not much left to say. But I will. Because I love this film. This is my favorite 'Friday', maybe more then even the first. This one feels like displaying the greatest potential of the franchise had to offer. Rather then having the killer (whoever it may be) dispatch teen counselors while they prepare for the opening a summer camp we visit said camp during its normal operations. Well, about as normal as C̶r̶y̶s̶t̶a̶l̶ ̶L̶a̶k̶e Forrest Green gets. What does that add to the mix? Kids.

This is one of the elements that I love about this film. It plays with the idea of who/what Jason really is. Here's the thing, everyone in these films are innocent. Assholes maybe, jerks certainly, but innocent mostly. Only the first teens were really at fault for the death of young Jason, and even then this was more a sin of indifference then malice, while the rest are really only guilty of being teenagers. Yeah, Vic aka Suicide did axe poor Joey to death but overall no one really deserved what they got. But Jason doesn't follow the rules of society. He gives no care for the will of karma or poetic justice. Jason has his own set of rules and if you break them he breaks you (or cuts you or smashes you or whatever is handy). He's kind of like a twisted boy scout.

Follow the rules or get the horns. And by horns I mean machetes.

So has does this challenge 'Jason Lives!'? Simple, the addition of true innocents. Yeah, teenagers are ripe with sin waiting to be reaped but what about all the children now attending the former Camp Crystal Lake?Shouldn't they be susceptible to the "death curse" like everyone else who sets trespasses there? We're never given a real answer, Jason never kills any kids, but the question is would he? The filmmakers of course where not going to show the slaughter of tweens, but as I interrupt the Jason myth he would. That's the curse, a wound that never heals. Jason is an agent of trauma. No conscience. No morality. No right or wrong. To me it doesn't matter how much sex or how much weed these teens have and it doesn't matter to Jason. He is not, as some have pointed out, a judge. He's an executioner.

But that doesn't mean he doesn't love getting valentine cards.
MAKE YOUR OWN
Happy Friday the 13th Jason. Have a ball baby.
